AT A TANGENT Vol.7
LACD341
THE CHICAGO - DIXIELAND STYLE BANDS. This is the latest volume in the series which looks at various aspects of the British Traditional Jazz scene which are at a tangent to the triple album, BRITISH TRADITIONAL JAZZ - A POTTED HISTORY (LACD300). This compilation looks at the bands mostly inspired by the Chicago school of Jazz. It doesn't necessarily choose the most famous bands in the style - their CDs are readily available - but looks at some lesser known bands as well as some rare gems.

THE JAKE LEG JUG BAND
EVERYTHIN'S JAKE
LACD340
With their good humour, attention to detail and varied repertoire the JLJB have built up a considerable following in just over two years. This is their second CD for LAKE and it was their previous one (LACD330) which propelled them from obscurity to being very much in demand in both Jazz Clubs and Folk Clubs the length and breadth of the UK. Blues & Rhythm magazine said that their music had a "knockabout, good-time feel" which just about sums it up!

THE BIX PROJECT BAND
BIX OFF THE RECORD
LACD339
Another in the Vintage Recording Project series. It was suggested that we devote a CD to the music of the Jazz legend, Bix Beiderbecke. We didn't want it to be another band rehashing Bix's "greatest hits" so it was decided to look at tunes we know Bix played, but never recorded and some tunes current at the time which he might have played. With a number of leading exponents of Vintage Jazz congregating for the Classic Jazz Party in Whitley Bay we persuaded six of the musicians to stay behind and make this recording. The result turned out to be hugely satisfyingwith some top-notch playing: Andy Schumm is one of the finest interpreters of Bix's music anywhere in the world and he is given superb support from Kristoffer Kompen on trombone, Mauro Porro on reeds, David Boeddinghaus on piano, Frans Sjöström on bass sax and Josh Duffee on drums.

PAT HALCOX
REMEMBERING PAT HALCOX
LACD338
When Pat Halcox joined Chris Barber's Jazz Band in the early 1950s it started a remarkable career. It produced the longest serving partnership in Jazz anywhere in the world as Pat held the trumpet chair until 2008. He developed from a talented young player to one of our finest Jazz musicians playing with originality, a broad tone, considerable subtlety and finesse, but also plenty of fire and attack as and when required. Pat also developed the technique to take on the considerable challengesChris Barber presented to the band over the years. This DOUBLE-CD-FOR-THE-PRICE-OF-ONE set has Pat playing with Chris Barber's band on the first CD, with a few tracks from each decade. Guest appearances come from Alex Welsh and Kenny Ball. The second CD has Pat guesting with other bands - including Humphrey Lyttelton's and Alex Welsh's - playing with American visitors Art Hodes and Don Ewell and fronting his own All Stars. None of the tracks has ben released before.

CHRIS BARBER'S JAZZ & BLUES BAND
CLASS OF '78
LACD337
Following on from LACD332 this is another attempt to fill the gap of Chris Barber's recordings from the 1970s. This collection was one of the classic issues by the Barber band of the time and had some changes in personnel: Vic Pitt had joined on bass, Roger Hill had replaced John Slaughter and Pete York - a Rock drummer previously associated with the Spencer Davis Group and The Average White Band amongst others - had joined. The most significant change, though, Was the addition of a second reed in the front line. This role was undertaken by Sammy Rimington. Sammy, who was largely regarded as a strict New orleans style player had, actually had much more wide ranging experience and ability. It's a typical varied Chris Barber set, well recorded in concert.

THE NEW CENTURY RAGTIME ORCHESTRA
SINGIN' IN THE BATHTUB
LACD336
The eight piece NCRO was formed in 1998 with the intention of preserving and playing orchestrated Ragtime tunes. Over the intervening years the personnel has expanded to thirteen and the repertoire has widened to include Classic Jazz and Hot Dance music. Tunes on this CD date from 1903 and run the whole gamut up to 1931: classic Ragtime pieces to early Swing tunes; obscure tunes to the more familiar. This is no serious, straight-laced presentation, though; the band plays with a love of this music and the enthusiasm comes through loud and clear. Two guests join the band on the CD: Keith Nichols and Nick Ward

BRITISH TRADITIONAL JAZZ: AT A TANGENT VOL.6
LACD335
THE CLASSIC STYLE BANDS. Once the revival of Traditional Jazz got underway during the late 1940s and into the 1950s the bands started to split into different camps: those who followed the New Orleans style, those who favoured the Chicago style and those who preferred the Classic style typified by King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Clarence Williams, et al. This CD presents a collection of bands who followed this latter course and provides a varied sample of the different approaches within that style.

BEN COHEN with BRIAN WHITE'S MAGNA JAZZ BAND
REMEMBERING BEN COHEN
LACD334
This is the first release in Lake's new LIMITED EDITION series. These are CDs of music or musicians which are not expected to be volume sales, but which deserve to be heard. They will appeal to collectors and completists as well as general buyers. This CD is dedicated to cornet player Ben Cohen. He came to public attention when he joined Chris Barber's New Orleans Jazz Band in 1950. From 1950 until his death in 2002 Ben Cohen became highly regarded as a fiery 'hot' player in the early Louis Armstrong mould. He played in the bands of Alex Revell, Cy Laurie, Ian Bell, The Temperance Seven, Mike Daniels and many others. Keith Nichols used him on his recreations of 1920s bands. Ben Cohen recorded for LAKE as a member of the Sonny Dee All Stars and Laurie Chescoe's Goodtime Jazz. This CD sees him with Brian White's Magna Jazz Band on previously unreleased tracks from 1979, 1984 and 1987. It is good, swinging jazz in the Chicago style and shows why Ben Cohen was so well regarded by musicians and jazz fans alike.

KEN MATHIESON'S CLASSIC JAZZ BAND
CLARINET GUMBO
LACD333
This the third CD on LAKE Records for Ken Mathieson's Classic Jazz Orchestra. Rather than simply run through the jazz of the Classic Jazz era in a Trad Jazz style Ken Mathieson takes the tunes and arranges them in a modern context for his eight piece band. The result is a refreshing take on often well-worn tunes - " so much of it is due to Ken's brilliant arrangements" said Just Jazz magazine of a previous release. The Scotsman newspaper commented that "Mathieson's crisp and intelligent arrangements give an original twist to familiar tunes". Again, that is much in evidence on this release and reinforces the timeless quality of these Jazz tunes. Previous albums have been on particular themes and this one is no different. The guest is the hugely talented New Orleans based clarinettist, Evan Christopher. The tunes are associated with legendary clarinet players - Bechet, Bigard,Simeon, Hall, Noone and others. Christopher is undoubtedly the star. but the rest of the band rise give first class support.

CHRIS BARBER'S JAZZ & BLUES BAND
JAZZ ME BLUES - THE 70s
LACD332
DOUBLE CD FOR THE PRICE OF ONE. In our extensive issue programme of Chris Barber CDs the 1970s have been neglected. Although Chris Barber had added the Blues guitar towards the end of the 1960s, the 1970s saw the renaming of the Jazz Band to the Jazz & Blues Band. This set is taken from the early part of the 70s before the addition of a second reed and although still rooted in the Jazz repertoire the band has played since its inception there was much more experimentation taking place. All the tracks here have been previously unreleased and include four tracks of Jimmy Witherspoon singing with the band and two bonus tracks of Chris playing with Muddy Waters' band. The CD release coincides with the publication of Chris Barber's autobiography also entitled 'JAZZ ME BLUES'.
