HOT FINGERS
SMILE
LACD331
'Spats' Langham, Danny Blyth, Malcolm Sked and Emily Campbell return with their second CD on the LAKE label. The eclectic mix is as before: string band material, gypsy jazz, hokum, swing and jazz classics with a hint of Broadway. 22 tracks played with great musical skill, enthusiasm, a touch of class and obvious enjoyment. Of their previous CD (LACD311) R2 magazine said "this is a likeable, good-humoured, entertaining album by wonderful musicians". The same applies to this album as well.

VARIOUS
AT A TANGENT VOL.4 - THE TERRITORY BANDS
LACD327
Continuing the 'additions' to the triple album set 'A POTTED HISTORY OF BRITISH TRADITIONAL JAZZ' (LACD300) this collection take a snapshot view of the large number of bands which were formed in various part of the country as a result of the interest in Traditional Jazz. Aside from the major bands these local bands were the backbone of the scene often playing weekly in a local club. Some like Bristol's Avon Cities Jazz Band achieved some national recognition and landed recording contracts while others, like Carlisle's Gateway Jazz Band were rooted in their region. Some produced musicians who went on to greater things: John Barnes emerged from the Zenith 6 to become one of the UK's leading Jazz reedmen. The trumpet player in Bill Croft's band based in Newcastle Upon Tyne was John Walters went on to be a BBC producer working with John Peel. Some had a long lifespan whilst others were quite shortlived. There are many such bands still around today. This CD contains many rare tracks and some released for the very first time.

BOB WALLIS & HIS STORYVILLE JAZZMEN
A JAZZ CLUB SESSION WITH BOB WALLIS & HIS STORYVILLE JAZZMEN
LACD326
****DOUBLE CD FOR THE PRICE OF ONE**** Another in the series of recordings made by Allan Gilmour at the Dancing Slipper Jazz Club in Nottingham. The Storyville Jazzmen were at the very commercial end of the Trad Jazz period and these recordings are quite a revelation in that they show the band away from the concert stage and in a Jazz club "letting its hair down", playing some spirited Jazz and enjoying itself. It was a band of quality musicians and these well recorded sides show much better than its commercial recordings just what it was capable of.

MIKE DANIELS & HIS DELTA JAZZ BAND
MIKE ON MIKE
LACD322
Mike Daniels led one of the best bands during the Trad era. He remained steadfastly semi-professional and pursued a policy of playing Classic Jazz from the Armstrong/Oliver/Morton period. No slavish copyist, though, Mike Daniels' band interpreted the music in its own style. Despite the semi-pro status the band made one LP and one single for major labels. Both are included here plus six 'vintage' tracks from the band's early period 1949/50. The band, of course, included one of the UK's best reed players, John Barnes. This is well-played hot Jazz.
