HOT FINGERS
IN GLORIOUS MONO
LACD311
Spats Langham is no stranger to the LAKE Records catalogue either through his own CDs with his Hot Combination (LACDs228 & 274) his collaborations with Martin Litton and Malcolm Sked (LACDs 226 & 287)and his guest appearances on other CDs. The group he probably does most work with is Hot Fingers: Spats on vocals, guitar, banjo and ukulele, Danny Blyth on guitar, mandolin, clarinets and vocals, Malcolm Sked on double and brass basses. Added to the mixture is their regular guest vocalist, Emily Campbell. The title is derived from the fact that it is volume 2 of our Vintage Jazz Recording Project series and was recorded using a single ribbon microphone as it would have been in the 1930s. The eclectic repertoire - ranging from gypsy jazz through Ukulele Ike to Louis Prima taking in Gershwin on the way - is performed with skill and panache and has resulted in an excellent, hugely enjoyable CD.

DIZ DISLEY & HIS STRING QUINTET
DIZ DISLEY & HIS STRING QUINTET
LACD307
This album represents some of the finest acoustic jazz from the 1950s, played by one of the British Jazz scene’s great eccentrics, maverick, cartoonist, broadcaster, and individual guitar player, William 'Diz' Disley. He fulfilled and ambition to have a group based on Django Reinhardt’s famous Quintette Du Hot Club De France and formed his String Quintet around 1956 mainly to play for his own enjoyment, but “we found after a season as interval group at the Humphrey Lyttelton Club in London that people seemed to go for the music and before we knew what was happening we were doing loads of broadcasts……”. The Quintet also has its own club in the London suburb of Wood Green. The group you hear on this CD was in existence between 1958 and 1960. Diz reformed the group in 1983. The first set of recordings was made for Doug Dobell’s 77 Records label and amply illustrate the cohesion achieved by the group. Popularity led to the group being offered a contract by Denis Preston for the Jazz Today series he was releasing on the Pye label, one of the major UK labels. The repertoire ranges from standard Swing numbers to tunes associated with Reinhardt and Grappelli.

THE CRANE RIVER JAZZ BAND
A JAZZ CLUB SESSION WITH THE CRANE RIVER JAZZ BAND
LACD306
One of the legendary bands of the British Jazz Revival of the 1940s. It contained several musicians who went on to have leading roles on the Jazz scene: Ken Colyer, Monty Sunshine, John RT Davies, Sonny Morris. The disbanded in the 1950s then reformed in the 1970s. This recording, part of the collection of recordings made by Allan Gilmour at the Dancing Slipper in Nottingham, features the band honouring a gig shortly after Ken Colyer died. It is a typical Cranes 'live' session with plenty of atmosphere and some good stomping Jazz.

CHRIS BARBER'S JAZZ BAND

Ian Wheeler (who died in 2011)joined in 1961 and brought Alto Sax and Harmonica into the band. John Slaughter (who died in 2010) brought the Blues Guitar to the band in 1965. The choice of material is the usual Chris Barber eclectic mix.

RAY FOXLEY
THE PROFESSOR'S CHOICE
LACD304
Ray Foxley made his first recordings in the 1940s but came to national recognition when he joined Ken Colyer's Jazzmen in 1957. He became labelled as a Ragtime pianist, but there was always much more to Ray than that. He was a composer of some merit and yet rarely made recordings on his own and rarely featuring his own material. This CD recorded in 1988, but never issued until now amply showcases Ray's ability with Ragtime, some standard Jazz material and some of his best compositions.
