VARIOUS
BRITISH TRADITIONAL JAZZ - AT A TANGENT Vol.1
LACD316
LACD300 gave an overview of the development of Traditional Jazz in Britain. What it could not do was look at some of the things which were also happening. This CD is sub-titled 'Breaking The Mould' because it looks at bands and musicians who did not always pursue a predictable path. Humphrey Lyttelton was not the only one moving into a more Mainstream style and this CD looks at some of those musicians. There also bands which were not averse to trying things out with musicians from other styles of Jazz. The CD contains some interesting surprises

HUMPHREY LYTTELTON-WALLY FAWKES TROGLODYTES
RENT PARTY
LACD315
Despite upsetting theTraditional Jazz fans by bringing a saxophone into his band in the mid 1950s and pursuing a Mainstream style of Jazz Humphrey Lyttelton never lost his roots. Occasionally he would venture back into a more Traditional style. Here he teams up with his his erstwhile partner from his early band, the redoubtable Wally Fawkes, and in the company of other stalwart traditionalists like Colin Bowden, Keith Nichols, John Beecham and Paul Sealy he revisits some of his old repertoire. This CD was previously released as Stomp Off CD1238.

SANDY BROWN
VINTAGE SANDY BROWN - THE SWARBRICK & MOSSMAN SIDES
LACD313
Sandy Brown became one of the UK's most gifted Jazz players. From his early days, heavily influenced by the legendary Johnny Dodds, he followed the Traditional Jazz route before developing a more Mainstream approach. In the very early days in Edinburgh he produced a series of recordings which have become the subject of folklore: issued by a record shop based in Glasgow in very, very limited quantities. That any have survived over 60 years is remarkable. That they have survived in reasonable enough condition to to able to be cleaned up to make them listenable is amazing. Sidemen who went on the become leading Jazz men in their own right include Al Fairweather, Stan Greig and Alex Welsh.

HOT FINGERS
IN GLORIOUS MONO
LACD311
Spats Langham is no stranger to the LAKE Records catalogue either through his own CDs with his Hot Combination (LACDs228 & 274) his collaborations with Martin Litton and Malcolm Sked (LACDs 226 & 287)and his guest appearances on other CDs. The group he probably does most work with is Hot Fingers: Spats on vocals, guitar, banjo and ukulele, Danny Blyth on guitar, mandolin, clarinets and vocals, Malcolm Sked on double and brass basses. Added to the mixture is their regular guest vocalist, Emily Campbell. The title is derived from the fact that it is volume 2 of our Vintage Jazz Recording Project series and was recorded using a single ribbon microphone as it would have been in the 1930s. The eclectic repertoire - ranging from gypsy jazz through Ukulele Ike to Louis Prima taking in Gershwin on the way - is performed with skill and panache and has resulted in an excellent, hugely enjoyable CD.

DIZ DISLEY & HIS STRING QUINTET
DIZ DISLEY & HIS STRING QUINTET
LACD307
This album represents some of the finest acoustic jazz from the 1950s, played by one of the British Jazz scene’s great eccentrics, maverick, cartoonist, broadcaster, and individual guitar player, William 'Diz' Disley. He fulfilled and ambition to have a group based on Django Reinhardt’s famous Quintette Du Hot Club De France and formed his String Quintet around 1956 mainly to play for his own enjoyment, but “we found after a season as interval group at the Humphrey Lyttelton Club in London that people seemed to go for the music and before we knew what was happening we were doing loads of broadcasts……”. The Quintet also has its own club in the London suburb of Wood Green. The group you hear on this CD was in existence between 1958 and 1960. Diz reformed the group in 1983. The first set of recordings was made for Doug Dobell’s 77 Records label and amply illustrate the cohesion achieved by the group. Popularity led to the group being offered a contract by Denis Preston for the Jazz Today series he was releasing on the Pye label, one of the major UK labels. The repertoire ranges from standard Swing numbers to tunes associated with Reinhardt and Grappelli.
