JOHN HALLAM & IAN BATEMAN with The Tom Kincaid Trio
ME AND MY SHADOW
LACD301
John Hallam and Ian Bateman had worked together with the LAKE Records Jazz Band and on the 1930s Jazz Recording Project and had harboured a desire to do a CD together. As two of the finest exponents of their chosen instruments in the UK it seems to be an ideal partnership. The session was very relaxed and the outcome is a CD of pure class. Tom Kincaid's Trio proved to be the ideal backing group.

VARIOUS
BRITISH TRADITIONAL JAZZ - A POTTED HISTORY 1936 - 1963
LACD300
LAKE's fastest selling CD ever! A triple CD set for the price of one! There have been any number of compilations along the line of 'Trad Greats' or 'Trad Favourites' which often seem like re-workings of the same material. This collection is an attempt to tell the story of the Traditional Jazz musical genre in the UK which had a pre-history in the 1930s, got properly underway in the 1940s and grew to be at the forefront of popular music during the 1950s and early 1960s. As well as the mainstays of messrs Ball, Barber, and Bilk this collection includes many of the lesser known and regional bands who added to the music's popularity. Out of the 73 tracks many are previously unissued or extremely rare. The narrative in a 40 page booklet puts the bands and the music into perspective.

THE BATEMAN BROTHERS JAZZ BAND
NOW YOU HAS JAZZ
LACD299
***VOTED BEST CD - 2011 BRITISH JAZZ AWARDS*** It is a long time since a really top quality traditional style Jazz band appeared on the scene, but the Bateman brothers (Ian & Alan) have formed one. The band is based around reworking the material of the Louis Armstrong All Stars of the 1950s. All the musicians are top quality: Ian Bateman - Trombone; Alan Bateman - Trumpet; Trevor Whiting - Reeds; Craig Milverton - Piano; John Day - bass; Steve Rushton - Drums plus Maggie Reeday - Vocals. The band captures the very essence of this music.

HUMPHREY LYTTELTON HIS QUARTET & BAND
HIGH CLASS
LACD298
In the legacy of recordings left by Humphrey Lyttelton there are one or two absolute gems of albums which tend to get overlooked. The LP 'HUMPH MEETS CAB' from 1960 is one such. It features the singer Cab Kaye (himself very neglected as far a recordings are concerned) who has a style reminiscent of Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis and, even, Billie Holiday. The original album forms the basis of this CD and it features Humph in a quartet setting with just his rhythm section - another rarity for Humph. The CD is filled out with some previously unreleased tracks by the full band and an EP which was only issued in Germany (although two tracks appeared on a single in the UK).

ALEX WELSH & HIS BAND
ALEX WELSH & FRIENDS
LACD295
The wonderful Alex Welsh Band and Alex's friends are guitarist, Diz Disley, trombonist, George Chisholm, singer, Beryl Bryden and bass saxophonist, Harry Gold. All legends of British Jazz. The set is of previously unreleased 'live' material and very well recorded. Several of the tunes Alex never recorded commercially. Alex never had a bad band and these recordings from 1958-1960 reveal the band on exceptionally good form - lovely playing by Archie Semple, Roy Crimmins and Fred Hunt.

CHRIS BARBER'S JAZZ BAND
ELITE SYNCOPATIONS
LACD294
***VOTED No.3 BEST REISSUE 2011 - BRITISH JAZZ AWARDS*** Very few Trad Jazz albums were what we would now call 'concept' albums. An exception was this classic one from 1960 which was devoted to Ragtime tunes. The band adopts a variety of approaches ranging from a strictly "as written" one to treating the melody like any other jazz tune with plenty of scope for improvisation. The original LP set is enhanced by some tunes previously unreleased plus two tracks of Chris Barber's ragtime arrangements recorded when Chris was in Ken Colyer's Jazzmen in 1953.

CHRIS BARBER'S JAZZ & BLUES BAND with KEN COLYER
NEW ORLEANS PARADE
LACD293
The roots of Chris Barber's Band lay in Ken Colyer's Jazzmen in 1953. During the 1980s a series of reunion concerts took place. Usually they involved the original 1953 line-up but some featured just Ken Colyer with the band. That configuration never formally recorded and, until recently when these recordings came to light, there were no known concert recordings. Ken Colyer, a legend in New Orleans Jazz in the UK, although suffering illness during that period, plays extremely well and fits into the more contemporary style of the Barber band with ease. The Barber band had visited New Orleans in the 1980s and recorded with various musicians from the city including Dr John. The album features two tracks by the New Orleans Parade Band made up from the band.
