THE 1930s RECORDING PROJECT
THE 1930s RECORDING PROJECT
LACD289
In March 2010 we initiated a project to recreate a small band Jazz recording of the 1930s. The idea was not to try to recreate a particular band but to evoke an era and a 'sound'. For the session we used a single authentic 1938 RCA Ribbon Microphone and valve equipment. We also selected a group of musicians who were experienced in, and sympathetic to, the era: Andy Woon (tpt), Ian Bateman (tmb), John Hallam (reeds), 'Spats' Langham (gtr, bjo, vocal), Martin Litton (pno), Richard Pite (dms), Malcolm Sked (bass). Variously they have experience is playing in vintage and swing bands such as The Pasadena Roof Orch., The Charleston Chasers, The Back To Basie Orch., The Kings Of Swing, etc. The session was filmed for a documentary and a 4 minute film clip is included on the CD.

DEBBIE ARTHURS' SWEET RHYTHM
THE TALK OF THE TOWN
LACD288
Debbie Arthurs is at the forefront of the burgeoning interest in the popular music of the 1920s and 1930s both as leader of The Charleston Chasers and, as here, with her own group, Sweet Rhythm. Her main influence is Annette Hanshaw – the ‘Personality Girl’. She possess excellent taste, effortless swing as well as perfect intonation and flawless phrasing in the style of her chosen era. She is, however, no mere copyist. She delivers with style, panache and an air of authenticity which never falls into mere pastiche. The members of the group are some of the leading exponents of music of the era and are on op form here. Her previous album sold extremely well and we expect the same here

DUKE HEITGER with KEN MATHIESON'S CLASSIC JAZZ ORCHESTRA
CELEBRATING SATCHMO
LACD286
Instead of simply recreating Louis Armstrong performances Ken Mathieson's thoughtful and cleverly constructed new arrangements of tunes associated with the legendary trumpeter for his superb little band avoid simply re-treading old ground. He has added a guest, the hugely talented American trumpet player, Duke Heitger, to put his own exquisite stamp on them. As Just Jazz magazine commented “these are fine musicians…this line-up is so strong that there is never any doubt“. This is a joyful album, packed with good music and swings like mad.
